On January 20, 1965, Dr. A. Lakshmanaswami Mudaliar (Chairman, Board of Governors) officially inaugurated the Central School building on the Institute's campus. An ornate Jaali wall frames the entrance to the school’s hallway. A Jaali wall, implying “perforated stone” or “latticed screen” is quintessential of Indo-Islamic architecture. The jaali, in addition to providing structural strength, allows ventilation and light in while keeping the sun and rain out. This hallway led to the school's main entrance, where the inauguration ceremony took place. However, this is no longer the main entrance of the school. The Central School at IIT Madras started operating with classes VI to IX on July 20, 1964. The new school building was equipped with large classrooms, laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, a library and well-equipped administrative offices. There were also facilities for basketball, football, hockey, cricket, volleyball, badminton, ring tennis, and throwball in the school grounds. Dr. Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar (left) was a member of the Board of Governors of IIT Madras. He was appointed Minister-in-Charge of Education, Public Health and Excise in the year 1936. With a passion for Tamil language, literature, music, and culture, he made significant contributions to the Tamil cause and was awarded the title of Tamil Isai Kavalar. The Central School at IIT Madras started operating, with classes from VI to IX, on July 20, 1964. Classes X and XI were introduced in June 1965 and June 1966, respectively. At the end of the academic year 1965 - 66, class VI had 45 students, class VII had 33, class VIII had 31, class IX had 14, and class X had 8. Now, the school has grown to accommodate students in classes I through XII, with a total enrolment of 1802 students and 45 staff members (as of March 31, 2020). On the day of the Central School building’s opening, the inauguration stone was placed in a temporary wooden frame. This stone is currently positioned near the new entrance to the school. The school building, located near the Gajendra Circle was officially inaugurated by Dr. A. L.
