The NCC Day and the inauguration of the NCC building took place on the same day, on 14 December 1965. This has been recorded in the Seventh Annual Number of IIT Madras, 1965-66. While the inauguration took place outside the NCC building, the NCC Day Celebrations were held in an open ground (possibly near the NCC building). Major General Virendra Singh was associated with IIT Madras even prior to 1965. He was the chief guest on the Institute NCC Day on 4 December 1963.

He was the chief guest on the Institute NCC Day on 4 December 1963. It is likely that the Director-General was inaugurating the building in this photograph, owing to the fact that it appears as though he is pressing a switch or button which may have been placed on the table. The NCC Office is currently located in one of the ‘Warden’s Quarters’ behind Himalaya Canteen (As of October 2021). The…

Major General Virendra Singh (Director General, NCC) was the chief guest during the inaugural function of the new NCC building on 14 December 1965. It is possible that the officer in the photograph is Mr. Singh because the uniform and badge closely resemble the ones that he wore on that day. He was associated with IIT Madras even prior to 1965. He was the chief guest during NCC Day on 4 December 1963. The Indian Army website notes that Major General Virendra Singh was “extremely intelligent, motivated and dedicated”. It is also mentioned that he was selfless and was of a cheerful…
As the NCC flag proudly flies high, the audience tunes in to listen to Major General Virendra Singh’s (Director-General, NCC) speech. The NCC flag has three colours representing the armed forces, red for the Army, deep blue for the Navy, and light blue for the Air Force. A wreath of lotus flowers encircles the letters NCC which are printed in gold in the middle of the flag. The opening ceremony of the new NCC building took place on the same day with Mr. Singh as the chief guest. The event has been recorded in the Annual Number of IIT Madras, 1965-66 with a couple of photographs and a brief…
Major General Virendra Singh (Director-General, NCC) inaugurated the NCC building on 14 December 1965 and was also a part of the NCC Day celebrations. He was associated with IIT Madras even prior to 1965, when he was the chief guest on the Institute NCC Day on 4 December 1963. It is likely that the audience comprised people from the villages of Velachery and the surrounding areas, since the boundary walls were not constructed at the time. That possibly explains the presence of the children and a large attendance among the audience.
