This photograph was taken at the 26th convocation of IIT Madras which was held on 8 August 1989. This particular photograph shows (from the left), Prof. L. S. Srinath (Director, IIT Madras) and chief guest Mr. Russi Mody (Chairman and Managing Director, Tata Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., now known as Tata Steel Limited) sitting on the stage amongst other distinguished guests.

This photograph was taken on 8 August 1989 when IIT Madras held its 26th Convocation. The image shows Prof. L. S. Srinath, the then Director of IIT Madras on the day of the Convocation. In this image, a gentleman helps Prof. L. S. Srinath with his convocation robes. Prof. L. Srinath was the Director of IIT Madras from 27 July 1984 till 10 August 1989 making this his last Convocation as Director. 

This photograph was taken on the 26th Convocation of IIT Madras. In this image, flowers are arranged in front of the Student Activities Centre (SAC) to mark the occasion of the 26th Convocation. On one side of the floral decoration, “26th Convocation” is seen, and on the other side, the date of the convocation is marked: “8.8.1989” with the logo of IIT Madras which is that of a lamp, appearing in the centre.

Apart from the 244 B.Tech., 328 M.Tech., 51 M.Sc., 54 M.S., and 81 Ph.D. degrees awarded during this convocation, several special prizes (merit and endowment) were also awarded.

This photograph shows Devraj Sanyal, vocalist of the thrash metal band Brahma performing at IIT Madras’ annual cultural fest Saarang. Brahma was one of the leading bands in India at the time. Formed in 1993, the Mumbai based metallers released a studio album in the 1990s before releasing a few more in the 2000s and 2010s. Sanyal was known for his powerful vocals and command over the crowds at live performances.

This photograph was taken during the final night of Saarang. Brahma, a thrash metal band from Mumbai headlined the rock show. The photograph shows Devraj Sanyal (vocalist, left) and John Ferns (guitarist, right) performing at the Open Air Theatre. Rock shows were one of the most anticipated events at Saarang. Some of the biggest names in Indian and international rock music have played at Saarang. A few of the bands include Opeth, Pain of Salvation, Avial, Motherjane and Veil of Maya.

This photograph was taken during IIT Madras annual cultural and social fest Saarang. This photograph was found in an album containing photographs from the rock night on 26 January and it is likely that his photograph was also taken during the same time.  We do not know who the students are.
