This photograph was taken during the variety programme which consisted of entertainment shows including plays, music performances, a mushaira and also a magic performance.  The 1960s were a time when the counterculture movement was glowing in the U.S.A. Rock music, pop and several other genres were in the forefront during this era. Students in Chennai took to this trend, and rock and pop became a popular choice for youngsters.

This photograph was taken during the variety programme of the Seventh Institute Day. The magic show was a part of the variety programme staged on the occasion. The other programmes included songs by various groups including the Beat-X, (a band consisting of B. Tech. students), a couple of plays including a Tamil play, and a mushaira.  Mr. Gopal Ramachandran graduated with a B. Tech. degree in electrical engineering in 1967.

This photograph was taken during the Seventh Institute Day. The Annual Number “Institute Magazine” was released on Institute Days in the 1960s. It contained poems, articles and photographs contributed by the IIT Madras students, staff and faculty. They also provided reports from departments, the Gymkhana and other organisations from the Institute.  Prof. B. Sengupto (extreme left) was the first Director of IIT Madras (1959 to 1967) while Dr. A. L. Mudaliar (wearing a turban) was the first Chairman of the Institute (1959 to 1969). This photograph was taken during the variety programme which consisted of entertainment shows including band performances, plays and a magic show. The student sitting second from left is Mr. V. Srinivasan (1969 B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering), while the other performers are yet to be identified.  Traditionally, a mushaira is a poetic symposium where Urdu poets gather to perform their works. Prof. B. Sengupto was the first Director of IIT Madras (1959 to 1967). He was responsible for the growth of IIT Madras in its early years. It was under his guidance that most of the infrastructure at the Institute, including the academic complexes, workshops and hostels came into existence. This was the first time the Chairman of the Board of Governors was chief guest at an Institute Day. Dr. A. L. Mudaliar was the chief guest during this event. Mr. C. Subramaniam (Union Minister for Food and Agriculture), was unable to come to the event and had been initially chosen to be the chief guest. In the photograph, from the left, Prof. N. Also seen standing on the dais is Mr. Rajagopalan (Deputy Registrar). At the seventh convocation, Prof. A. Ramachandran (Director, IITM) conferred the degrees and diplomas on 214 candidates, who attended the convocation and in absentia on 346 students. The chief speaker distributed prizes to the prize winners and delivered the convocation address. The President’s Prize was awarded to Mr. Sachindra Kumar Jain (3-year B.Tech. The seventh convocation of IITM was held on a Saturday evening at 5:00 pm, the 29th of August, 1970. Dr. Y. Nayudamma, representing the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Institute (Mr. H. V. R. Iengar), presided over the ceremony. The chief guest for the event was Dr. V. V. Giri (President of India). A German delegate, Mr. Gunter Diehl (Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in India) also attended the event.  An identical photograph can be found in the Gourishankar Collection in Album 0279 under the ID: 001/0279/IMG_0447

The seventh convocation of IITM was held on a Saturday evening at 5:00 pm, the 29th of August, 1970. Dr. Y. Nayudamma, representing the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Institute (Mr. H. V. R. Iengar), presided over the ceremony. The chief guest for the event was Dr. V. V. Giri (President of India). A German delegate, Mr. Gunter Diehl (Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in India) also attended the event.
