Mrs. Shanti Sengupto was the wife of Prof. B. Sengupto, who was the first Director of IIT Madras. During Institute Days, trophies and prizes were distributed for academic and extra-curricular achievements to students, staff and faculty of the Institute. We know from the annual report of IIT Madras for 1962-1963 that twelve prizes were given to winners of literary competitions conducted during the year. The person receiving the prize is yet to be identified.

According to the 15 April 1963 edition of Campastimes, The entertainment programme consisted of a German sketch, an English drama, a Tamil Play and a Malayalam shadow-play. This photograph is possibly from the Malayalam shadow-play, owing to the curtain and lighting being set up in a manner befitting a shadow-play. An account in Campastimes states that the Open Air Theatre was jam packed with around 4000 people.

This photograph was taken during the Fourth Institute Day of IIT Madras. The chief guests were possibly welcomed at the Bose-Einstein Guest House before being taken to the main event which was held at the Open Air Theatre (OAT).  From left, Mrs. Kraus, Dr. A. L. This photograph was taken during the Fourth Institute Day at IIT Madras. Prizes were given to students, staff and faculty of the Institute for their extra-curricular contributions to the Institute.  The structure (inverted triangle) behind the students is one of the defining features of the Open Air Theatre (OAT).

Mrs. Shanti Sengupto (the Director’s wife, extreme right) with guests inside the Bose-Einstein Guest House during the Fourth Institute Day. From the photographic evidence that is available, it appears that refreshments were served to the visitors and guests before the event began.

Dr. Nikolaus Klein joined IIT Madras on 13 July 1961. He was a professor of German at the Institute. Dr. Klein was a part of several extra-curricular activities at IIT Madras. He was involved in the magazine publication committees, served as Gymkhana President and was also the Master of Ceremonies when the German faculty entertained the IIT community.

This photograph was taken during the Fourth Institute Day at IIT Madras. The location of the photograph has been confirmed as the Bose-Einstein Guest House based on the fact the window grills match with that of the Guest House lobby even today (October 2022). From left, Mr. Bishnuram Medhi (Governor of Madras and chief guest), Dr. A. L. Dr. Mudaliar was the first Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT Madras. He served as Chairman from 1959 to 1969. Prof. Kraus (co-ordinator of the Indo-German Aid Program, fourth from left) was the first Professor and Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur. He visited IIT Madras in 1962 during the foundation stone laying ceremony.
