This photograph was taken during the visit of Mr. Walter Scheel to IIT Madras. Mr. Scheel was the Minister of Economic Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Germany. The location of this photograph appears to be the Bose-Einstein Guest House. This assumption has been made on the basis that the pattern of the window grills in the photograph match with the window grills at the Bose-Einstein Guest House today (2022). It is likely that the distinguished guests were welcomed at the guest house as soon as they arrived on campus. The guest house was a new facility on campus. The…
Mr. Scheel visited IIT Madras in 1963. He was the Minister of Economic Cooperation for the Federal Republic of Germany. During his visit to the Institute, he visited the Bose-Einstein Guest House, the Central Workshops and also some of the laboratories and academic complexes. This photograph was possibly taken at the Electrical Science Block (ESB). This assumption has been made based on the fact that the ventilation block pattern matches the one at ESB today (2022). The sofas were possibly placed in the lobby of the ESB. Seen in the photograph, from left in first row, Prof. B. Sengupto (…

During his visit to the Institute, he visited the Central Workshops, administrative building and also some of the laboratory facilities on campus. This photograph was taken at one such laboratory. This photograph was taken at the Carpentry Shop during the visit of Mr. Walter Scheel to IIT Madras. In the image, a student appears to be using a planing machine while Mr. Scheel inspects a block of wood. Construction of the Central Workshops was completed in June 1961. The Workshops were one of the first constructions to come up on campus. The idea behind the Central Workshops was to provide students with a practical knowledge of subjects in engineering that they were studying in classes. In this way, they would not only be theoretically sound, but also practically so. …

This photograph was taken during the visit of Mr. Walter Scheel to IIT Madras. He visited the Central Workshops, laboratories, and the administrative buildings during his visit. We believe that he was initially welcomed at the Bose-Einstein Guest House before proceeding to the other parts of campus. Tapti Hostel was among the first hostels to be completed on campus. It was completed in 1963 and inaugurated in the same year on 28 June. Seen in the photograph, Prof. R. A. Kraus (former Adviser to the Government of India for IIT Madras, tallest in photograph), Mr. R. Natarajan (…

Mr. Walter Scheel was the Minister of Economic Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Germany. He visited IIT Madras in December 1963. During his visit, he visited the Workshops, Laboratories and some of the academic complexes at the Institute. Judging by the photographs, it is likely that he was received at the Bose-Einstein Guest House before he proceeded to visit the rest of the Institute. An identical photograph can be found in Album 0178 of the Central Photographic Section Collection under the ID: 001/0178/0015_1
Mr. Scheel visited IIT Madras in December 1963. He was the Minister of Economic Cooperation for the Federal Republic of Germany. During his visit to the Institute, he visited several facilities on campus such as the Central Workshops, some of the laboratories and also the Bose-Einstein Guest House. This photograph appears to have been taken at either the Building Science Block (BSB) where the administrative offices were located, or at the Electrical Science Block (ESB), where refreshments and food was most likely served. This cannot be the Bose-Einstein Guest House because the pillars of the…
