This photograph was taken in 2005 during one of Saarang’s music competitions. In the photograph, a participant sings while the performance is accompanied by a student playing the keyboard. This event was held at the Central Lecture Theatre (CLT), Humanities and Sciences Block (HSB). This photograph is of one of the Saarang music competitions which included Indian light music and Western music. Saarang 2005 contained many events including professional shows such as classical music shows and Rock shows; competitions for the students included dance, music, quiz and debate.

This photograph has captured the drummer of the French rock band Matmatah. Matmatah performed during Saarang 2005. They released their latest album at the time titled Archie Kramer in 2004 following which they went on a  world tour in the end of October that year. In this photograph, taken during the cultural festival Saarang in 2005, Mrs. Jayashree Ananth is seen lighting the lamp or the kuthu vilakku. The gentleman wearing glasses at the right side of the photograph is Prof. M. S. Ananth, Director of IIT Madras (2001-2011). The lamp is lit not only to signal the start of an important event or occasion but also as a blessing for the event. This was lit for Saarang 2005, held from 21 to 26 January 2005.

  This photograph shows a band in the middle of their performance during Decibels 2005. Decibels, a Saarang event, is comprised of bands competing against each other. The Jazz Show titled “Be the Change” was performed by R. Prasanna, with Jeff Coffin on sax, Kai Eckhardt on bass guitar and Derico Watson on drum. The person in the image is Derico Watson, seen playing the drums. Be the Change was also the title of the album released by R. Prasanna in 2004. R. Prasanna, better known as Guitar Prasanna, is a musician best known for performing Carnatic music on the guitar. Classical Music Night was held on 21 January 2005 with musicians Ayaan Ali Bangash and Amaan Ali Bangash, sons of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, all of whom are famed for their musical prowess with the sarod. They can be seen in the photograph accompanied by Mr. Uma Shankar on ghatam and Sandeep Das on tabla. There was a large audience of about 4000 for this event.
