This convocation was the first to be held at the venue. Seen in the photograph are Mrs. Sheila Kaul (Union Minister for Education and Culture, left) and Dr. H. V. Hande (Minister of Health, right, in black shirt). Dr. Raja Ramanna (Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Bombay) is seen in the background (next to a police officer).

The photograph was taken during the 20th convocation day that was held in the newly built Student Activities Centre (SAC). The Student Activities Centre was built to host events, lectures and even indoor sports. This photograph was taken at IIT Madras’ 20th convocation held at the Student Activities Centre (SAC). Prof. P. V. Indiresan was the Director of IIT Madras at the time. Prof. Indiresan contributed quite extensively to the Institute during this period. One of his major contributions to the Institution was the introduction of a credit system which aimed at helping the students academically by allowing them the freedom of choice of subjects. This photograph was taken during the 20th convocation of the Institute.  The chief guest for the 20th convocation was none other than the President of India Mr. Giani Zail Singh (second from right). Mrs. Sheila Kaul (Union Minister for Education and Culture, third from right) was also present. Also seen in the photograph is Mr. A. Sivasailam (Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT Madras, extreme left). It appears that the President has just come out of his car before heading to the venue.

Seen in the photograph is Dr. Raja Ramanna (Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Bombay). He appears to be holding a list of some sort, possibly containing the names of graduates or awardees. It is mentioned in the Annual Report of the year 1983-1984 that Dr. Raja Ramanna was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) during the 20th convocation.

This photograph was taken during the Institute’s 20th convocation at the Student Activities Centre (SAC). Prof. P. V. Indiresan (right) was the Director of the Institute at the time. According to the Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1983-84, a total of 580 students received their degrees during the 20th convocation, pushing the total number of degrees awarded by the Institute to 9537.

Mr. Giani Zail Singh (President of India, right) plants a sapling to commemorate the inauguration of the Student Activities Centre (SAC). Construction of SAC was completed in 1983. The inauguration of SAC took place on the same day as the 20th convocation. Mr. Singh was the seventh President of India. He served his tenure from 1982 to 1987.

It is possible that the event was inaugurated with a multi-religious prayer.
