Dr. Konrad Seitz (Ambassador, Federal Republic of Germany) visited IIT Madras along with Mr. Hans Klein and other German visitors in order to officially hand over the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras. The computer was gifted to IIT Madras by the West German Government as part of the Indo-German Agreement. The sapling was planted possibly to commemorate the opening of the Computer Sciences Block and to symbolize the Indo-German bond. This photograph was taken during an event held to officially hand over the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras. It took place at the Central Lecture Theatre (CLT) at IIT Madras and was attended by several distinguished German guests. The computer system was gifted to IIT Madras by the Federal Republic of Germany under the Indo-German Agreement. Dr. Seitz was an academic and diplomat who authored several books on art and politics. The Computer Sciences Block, also referred to as the Computer Centre Block in the Annual Reports of IIT Madras, 1986 and 1987, was a newly constructed building which was built to house the Siemens 7580-E Computer System. It was constructed at a cost of 90 lakh rupees.  The Siemens system was gifted to IIT Madras by the Federal Republic of Germany. The Indian Government contributed around 18 percent of the cost according to a Campastimes interview with the Computer Centre manager Mr. P. Seshasayi. The Siemens 7580-E computer was a powerful computer which IIT Madras acquired from the Federal Republic of Germany as a part of the Indo-German agreement of 1986. Mr. Hans Klein (Minister for Economic Co-operation, Federal Republic of Germany) officially handed the computer to IIT Madras. The banner hung behind reads “Indian Institute of Technology, Madras / Handing over of / Siemens 7580-E computer system / His Excellency Mr. Hans Klein - March 22. 88’”. Mr. Klein was the Minister for Economic Co-operation for the Federal Republic of Germany. He visited IIT Madras in 1988 in order to officially hand the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras, as agreed upon in the Indo-German Agreement. Although the event took place in 1988, the system had been installed at the Institute towards the end of 1987. Mr. Klein served as Minister for Special Affairs from 1989-1990. It would replace the existing IBM 370 system which the Institute had acquired in 1973.
