The Humanities and Sciences Block (HSB) is among the oldest buildings to be built in the Institute. The Souvenir Volume to commemorate the visit of His Excellency Dr. Heinrich Luebke to IIT Madras on 3 December 1962 to lay the foundation stone, contains a report by the Superintending Engineer Mr. Y. S. Ramaswamy which provides information about the building. Mr. Ramaswamy notes that the work of the building started on 13 September 1961. A map of the Institute in the Convocation Brochure of IIT Madras, 1964 shows the location of the Ladies Club situated to the east of the Open Air Theatre (OAT). As of 2021, the Ladies Club building is located on Delhi Avenue, across the road from Kurinji Apartments. It was renovated over a decade ago (as of 10 January 2022). The Staff Club and Community Centre are also located next to the Ladies Club. The Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1964 reports that the Ladies Club started functioning in the year under report. The Aeronautical Engineering Building was opened by Mr. H. V. R. Iengar in April 1969. The Convocation Brochure of IIT Madras, 1967 notes the sanctioning of an Aeronautical Engineering Block. The Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1968 mentions that the Aeronautical Engineering Building was completed and occupied during the academic year. The report also mentions that the construction had started in December 1967. Admission Office

The Admission Office was in the former NCC Building, roughly opposite the Ocean Engineering Department. The words ‘National Cadet Corps’ can be seen above the entrance of the building. The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) was managed from this office. The examination is conducted for the admission to the IITs. This laboratory is currently located next to the Chemical Engineering Laboratory (as of January 2022). It is a part of the series of laboratories which are located adjacent to the Central Workshops. Album 0049 does not have a photograph of the Student Activities Centre (SAC) which was completed in 1983, but it does have a photograph of Quark, which was completed around 1980. Thus the date of the album is probably 1981 or 1982.

Hostel mess staff quarters

It is not clear to us where this building is located now, but we do know that it was adjacent to what were known as Security Staff Quarters. Details of this construction are invited. Album 0049 does not have a photograph of the Student Activities Centre (SAC) which was completed in 1983, but it does have a photograph of Quark, which was completed around 1980. Thus the date of the album is probably 1981 or 1982.

Jalakanteshwara Temple

Jalakanteshwara Temple

The Jalakanteshwara Temple started undergoing construction in 1962 and was completed in 1965. It is located on Delhi Avenue near the main gate of IIT Madras. The main deity of this temple is Lord Shiva who is worshipped as Jalakanteshwara along with his consort Devi Katyayani. According to a website, the Shiva lingam was present under a mandapam and a thatched roof near the IIT lake prior to the establishment of IIT Madras. Residents of villages nearby would offer their worship to the Shiva lingam. It was with the suggestion of Mahaperiyavar that the residents of the Institute built a…

The sign board appears to have been near Gajendra Circle and Kendriya Vidyalaya. Album 0049 does not have a photograph of the Student Activities Centre (SAC) which was completed in 1983, but it does have a photograph of Quark, which was completed around 1980. Thus the date of the album is probably 1981 or 1982.

Staff Canteen

The Staff Canteen was located behind the Central Workshop. The Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1963 notes the functioning of a canteen on New Year Day. It was built to fulfil a long-felt need of the staff. It is yet to be confirmed when the canteen stopped functioning. Album 0049 does not have a photograph of the Student Activities Centre (SAC) which was completed in 1983, but it does have a photograph of Quark, which was completed around 1980. Thus the date of the album is probably 1981 or 1982.

In Mr. Y. S. Ramaswamy’s (Superintending Engineer) article ‘The Campus’ in the Souvenir Volume to commemorate the visit of His Excellency Dr. Heinrich Luebke to IIT Madras on 3 December 1962 to lay the foundation stone, there is a report of the various buildings that were being built during the time. Mr. Ramaswamy notes that the building work for the Electrical Science Block (ESB) began on 27 February 1961. The Central Workshop was one of the earliest buildings to be built in the Institute. It was completed in August 1961 along with the Building Sciences Block (BSB). Mr. Y. S. The Mechanical Sciences Block (MSB) was planned early in the 1960s to accommodate the departments of Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Applied Mechanics and Metallurgy. The Superintending Engineer Mr. Ramaswamy writes that the construction of MSB commenced on 11 September 1961. MSB was completed ahead of schedule in 1963. Album 0049 does not have a photograph of the Student Activities Centre (SAC) which was completed in 1983, but it does have a photograph of Quark, which was completed around 1980. Thus the date of the album is probably 1981 or 1982.
