This photograph was taken in January 1968 when the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) held a seminar at IIT Madras. The DAAD was founded in 1925, offering merit-based grants to students from other countries to study in various universities in Germany. According to German News Weekly, around 500 Indians had received scholarships under the programme between 1952 and 1968. The seminar was attended by over 50 Indian grantees of German Scholarships. This photograph was taken at the seminar organized by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) at IIT Madras. Dr. Pfauter (Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany) was one of the speakers at the event. Dr. Karl Pfauter served as head of the cultural department at the German embassy in New Delhi in 1954, and from 1961, he was head of the economic department at the German embassy in Athens. Dr. Lehnartz visited IIT Madras in January 1968 when the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) organized a seminar to discuss further possibilities for improving the programme. It was attended by 50 Indian grantees of German scholarships. Dr. Lehnartz was in his final year as President of the DAAD when he visited IIT Madras.
