In the photograph, students from Mount Carmel College as well as other colleges can be seen posing for a photograph in the same location in which the informal music events were held.  While the music events and performances, especially the professional shows, at Mardi Gras took place at the Open Air Theatre, the art events were traditionally held at Shanti Kunj. Mardi Gras was held from 1974 to 1995. The cultural festival from 1996 onwards was named ‘Saarang’. The first ‘Saarang’ took place between 25 to 30 January 1996. Several distinct events were organised and conducted which included Western Music (Solo and Group), Fine Arts, Photography, Indian Light Music, Indian Classical Music, Main Quiz, Music Quiz, On the Spot, Creative Writing, Debate, Informals, Potpourri, Skits, Treasure Hunt and games such as Tintoretto and Password.  The events took place at different venues such as the Central Lecture Theatre, Open Air Theatre and so on. Events such as Indian Light Music and Fine Arts Competition took place at Shanti Kunj, in 1986, along with sylvan and silent surroundings.

In the photograph, students who are yet to be identified can be seen participating in a skit, during Mardi Gras ’83.  A variety of competitions took place during Mardi Gras (1983), which included western music (solo and group), Indian light music, Indian classical music, quiz, music quiz, fine arts, photography, on the spot, creative writing, debate, and Informals. Apart from this, there was also a competition for the overall Mardi Gras Championship. Pandit Ravishankar, who can be seen in the photograph performing alongside other well-known musicians during Mardi Gras, was a renowned Indian Musician, Sitar player, composer and the founder of National Orchestra of India. He studied the sitar under the noted musician Ustad Allauddin Khan. After serving as music director of All-India Radio till 1956, he began a series of European and American tours. During Mardi Gras ’83, Prof. P. V. Indiresan (Director, IIT Madras) can be seen addressing the audience during the Valedictory function at Central Lecture Theatre. He was appointed as Director of IIT Madras in April 1979. Having served as Director for a total of five years, until 1984, he made several contributions to the Institute during his tenure.
