It is likely that the gentleman delivering the speech is H. E. Theodor Heuss’ translator. We know from the annual report of IIT Madras (1963-1964) that Dr. Mudaliar opened the school on 8 July in 1963. In this photograph, he is seen carrying a bouquet, while Mr. R. Natarajan (Registrar, second from left) and Father Murphy (Professor of English, Loyola College, third from left) look on. The writing on the blackboard tells us that they are in a nursery class. Vanavani School was established on the IIT Madras campus in 1963. It was opened by Dr. A. L. Mudaliar (Chairman, Board of Governors) on 8 July 1963. The Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1963 mentions the inauguration briefly. According to the website of the school, it started as a primary school with just 52 students. As of 2021, the school has grown and developed into a Matriculation Higher Secondary School with over 2000 students, including both boys and girls.
