The opening ceremony was a grand affair with a march past of the contingents from Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur and the hosting team Madras. The oath taking usually takes place after the march past. Flag bearers come together to the dais where the announcer delivers the oath, which is repeated by the athletes. Among the five flags, three are identifiable. The right-most flag is that of IIT Madras, the leftmost is IIT Kharagpur’s and the one below IIT Kharagpur is IIT Bombay.
