This convocation was held in the Silver Jubilee Year of IIT Madras. It was the 25th year of the Institute’s establishment. Mr. Giani Zail Singh, the President of India, was the chief guest for the event. Mrs. Sheila Kaul was also present at the function. Seen in the photograph are, from the left, Mr. A. The stone slab in the photograph has the following words engraved, “Opened by Rashtrapati Giani Zail Singh September 18, 1983”. The inauguration was a part of the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of IIT Madras. The Silver Jubilee year marked 25 years since the establishment of the Institute.

The photograph was taken when Mr. Giani Zail Singh (chief guest and President of India) arrived for the 20th convocation of IIT Madras. He arrived with a motorcade as seen in the photograph. The event also marked 25 years since the founding of IIT Madras. It was the Silver Jubilee Year of IIT Madras, and one of the main events was the opening of the Student Activities Centre (SAC), a new building which was built for the purpose of holding convocations, meetings, functions and conducting sports.

Mr. Giani Zail Singh was the seventh President of India. He served his term from 1982 to 1987. Mr. Singh was the chief guest at the 20th convocation of IIT Madras. He inaugurated the Student Activities Centre (SAC) before the proceedings of the convocation.  On the board behind the stage, the words ‘Silver Jubilee Year 1983’ can be seen along with ‘20th Convocation’. It was IIT Madras’ 25th year of establishment and it was celebrated throughout the year.
